Description of Aconitum spp. :
Monkshood is an herbaceous perennial. It has a tuberous root much like ginger-root or a crocus. It is over 3 ft tall. The leaves are lobed or cleft. The flowers cluster at the end of the stems and are few. The flowers are shaped like a hood or helmet and the petals appear clawed. The fruit is a follicle with several seeds that are ellipsoid and beaked. A. uncinatum flowers are blue while those of A. reclinatum are yellow or white. Aconitum spp. are commonly used in Asian herbal medicines and have been linked to poisonings via medicinal use.
Aconite is a plant. The root is used as medicine. However, aconite contains some poisonous chemicals. In Hong Kong, aconite is the most common cause of severe poisoning from herbs. In Asia, toxicity is usually related to the use of aconite in traditional medicines. In western countries, aconite poisoning is usually associated with consuming the plant.
Despite serious concerns about safety, some people take aconite by mouth for facial paralysis, finger numbness, cold hands and inflammation, painful breathing and fluid in the space surrounding the certain problems (pericarditis sicca), fever, diseases, and Aconite is also used as a disinfectant, to treat wounds, and to promote sweating & Hair Loss.
Some people apply aconite to the skin in liniment as a “counterirritant” for treating facial pain, joint pain, and leg pain.

Medicinal Use:
In the Ayurvedic system of medicine, the rhizomes are considered to possess anti-spasmodic, carminative and anthelmintic properties, and, are used for the treatment of a host of diseases such as epilepsy and other mental ailments, chronic diarrhoea, dysentery, bronchial catarrh, intermittent fevers, glandular and abdominal tumours. They are also used to treat kidney and liver troubles, rheumatism and eczema.
